One of the questions I frequently ask in my work with parents is, what is your child interested in? What activities do they enjoy? What are they good at?" This curiosity stems from the powerful concept of a strengths-based approach, which forms the foundation of the advice I offer to support child development.
Simply put, a strengths-based approach involves identifying your child's abilities, talents, and preferences and using them as catalysts for motivation, support, and engagement. This shift in focus from deficits to strengths not only boosts self-esteem but also highlights personal accomplishments, talents, and unique preferences.
According to the Autism Good Practice Guidelines for Schools Supporting Children and Young People (Department of Education, Ireland, 2022), emphasizing strengths and interests provides affirming experiences, opportunities for enjoyment, and crucial avenues for personal development. It doesn't just stop there; it can also open doors to potential future work opportunities.
I firmly believe that a strengths-based approach is not only beneficial for all children but is especially crucial for those with Autism and other Neurodiverse Challenges. By recognizing and celebrating their unique strengths, we create an environment that nurtures their potential and fosters a sense of belonging.
